Graphite Electrodes for EDM
Electrical discharge machining is a non-contact thermal erosion process capable of precisely shaping all electrically conductive materials — including hardened tool steels and refractory alloys — where conventional cutting tools reach their practical limits. Because material is removed through controlled electrical discharges rather than mechanical force, the process is particularly well-suited to deep cavities, narrow ribs, and intricate surface structures in injection molds, die-casting tooling, and forging dies.
Isostatic fine-grain graphite has established itself as the dominant electrode material in precision EDM. Low, predictable electrode wear reduces re-machining frequency and improves run-to-run consistency. High flexural strength at elevated temperatures keeps electrode geometry stable under thermal load, and fine grain structure allows manufacturers to reach demanding surface roughness targets across a broad range of finishing classes.
Max Graphite supplies isostatic graphite in block, rod, and pre-machined electrode formats to mold shops, tooling departments, and OEM manufacturers. Our grades cover cost-effective roughing materials through to ultra-fine grades suited to micromachining and high-quality surface finishing applications.

Applications
- Injection mold cavity electrodes — for eroding complex hardened tool steel cavities with tight dimensional tolerances and fine surface detail
- Die-casting mold electrodes — maintaining electrode integrity across high-current roughing and multi-stage finishing cycles
- Forging die electrodes — suited to deep-cavity erosion in hardened die steels where mechanical milling is impractical or uneconomical
- Narrow rib and slot electrodes — producing deep, thin features in mold tooling that conventional end-milling cannot reliably achieve
- Prototype and development tooling electrodes — enabling fast electrode production for low-volume or R&D tooling programs
- Micromachining electrodes — ultra-fine grain grades for sub-millimetre features, sharp contour replication, and mirror-quality surface finishes
- Ready-to-run electrodes — supplied pre-machined to customer drawings for direct mounting on EDM machines without further preparation
- Aerospace and turbine component tooling electrodes — for complex aerodynamic profiles and intricate features in high-alloy workpiece materials
- Medical device and precision instrument mold electrodes — where surface finish consistency and dimensional repeatability are critical across production batches
Why Max Graphite?
Max Graphite supplies isostatic EDM graphite as both standard semi-finished blocks and rods and as precision-machined electrodes produced to customer drawings. Materials are manufactured to tight property tolerances — grain size, density, flexural strength, and electrical resistivity are monitored throughout production, with full lot traceability. We support engineers and procurement teams through grade selection and provide technical guidance on matching material properties to process parameters, workpiece material, and target surface finish. Single-source supply from semi-finished block through to finished electrode reduces lead times and simplifies supplier qualification.
