2D CFC Carbon/Carbon Composite Material
Max Graphite supplies 2D long-fiber carbon/carbon composite to engineers and procurement teams operating in high-temperature processing and broader high-performance structural industries, where in-plane flexural strength and dimensional stability under thermal load are direct process variables. We supply across grades P45 and P5 for plates and C5 and C2 for cylinders, from standard formats through large-format and near-net shapes. Single-source capability spans raw material through CNC-machined components, with purified grades available for purity-critical environments.

What is 2D CFC Carbon/Carbon Composite Material?
2D CFC (Two-Dimensional Carbon Fiber Reinforced Carbon) is a laminate composite produced from carbon fiber prepregs stacked in a 0°/90° or similar orientation, then carbonized and graphitized to form a high-performance structural material. Unlike isotropic graphite or short-fiber CFC, 2D CFC retains high strength and modulus in the plane of the laminate, making it the most widely specified carbon/carbon composite for high-temperature structural applications where directional load-bearing performance is required. Max Graphite supplies 2D CFC in plate and cylinder form across four standard grades — P45 and P5 for plates, C5 and C2 for cylinders — and offers halogen-purified variants for semiconductor and ultra-high-vacuum environments.

Properties of 2D CFC Carbon/Carbon Composite Material
- High in-plane flexural modulus — up to 69 GPa (P5 grade), supporting precision structural and tooling applications
- Ultra-low coefficient of thermal expansion — 1.0×10⁻⁶/℃, delivering exceptional dimensional stability through thermal cycles
- High compressive strength — up to 220 MPa in-plane, suitable for load-bearing fixtures and press tooling
- 3000°C working temperature — in inert or vacuum atmosphere across all grades
- Low electrical resistivity — suitable for use in heating element and current-carrying configurations
- High purity option — halogen purification reduces ash content to <5 ppm for sensitive process environments
- Controlled anisotropy — in-plane strength and stiffness engineered through layup orientation
- CNC machinable — plates and cylinders supplied as blanks or finish-machined to specification
Production Process of 2D CFC Composite
- Prepreg Preparation — Continuous carbon fibers (12K tow) are impregnated with thermosetting resin or pitch to form unidirectional or fabric prepreg.
- Lay-up (2D Lamination) — Prepreg sheets are stacked in a programmed orientation (e.g., 0°/90°, ±45°) to achieve the desired mechanical anisotropy.
- Molding & Curing — The laminate is compressed and heated to cure the matrix.
- Carbonization — Cured laminate is heat treated at ~1000°C in an inert atmosphere to convert the matrix into amorphous carbon.
- Densification (optional) — Multiple cycles of impregnation with pitch or resin followed by carbonization reduce porosity and enhance mechanical properties.
- Graphitization — Final heat treatment at 2400°C to achieve high crystallinity, low resistivity, and low CTE.
- Purification — Halogen purification can reduce ash content to <5 ppm for semiconductor or ultra-high-vacuum applications.
- Machining — CNC cutting, drilling, and turning to final dimensions.
