What is Graphite Foil?

Graphite Foil is a flexible sheet material manufactured exclusively from expanded natural graphite, without the use of binders or resins. The production process exfoliates and compresses graphite crystals, resulting in a material that retains graphite's inherent properties—excellent thermal and electrical conductivity, chemical inertness, and temperature resistance—while adding crucial flexibility and compressibility.

Unlike rigid graphite plates or carbon fiber sheets, graphite foil is soft, conformable, and can be easily cut or formed with simple tools. It acts as a versatile, high-performance sealing and thermal management solution where rigid materials cannot conform to uneven surfaces or withstand extreme thermal cycling.

Properties of Graphite Foil

The unique structure of graphite foil delivers an exceptional combination of properties for sealing, thermal management, and electromagnetic shielding applications.
  • Exceptional Thermal Conductivity: Efficiently spreads heat in the X-Y plane (in-plane conductivity), ideal for thermal interface materials and heat spreaders.
  • Wide Temperature Range: Performs reliably from cryogenic levels to extreme highs.
  • Superior Sealability: Highly conformable to seal uneven flanges and surfaces; maintains bolt load and seal integrity over time with excellent creep relaxation resistance.
  • Chemical Resistance: Resistant to most acids, alkalis, and solvents (except strong oxidizers), suitable for corrosive chemical processing environments.
  • Electrically Conductive: Suitable for grounding, EMI shielding applications, and electrochemical components like fuel cell and flow battery electrodes.
  • Lightweight & Easy to Handle: Can be cut, punched, and formed with simple tools for field fabrication and rapid prototyping.

Production Process of Graphite Foil

Graphite foil is produced through an advanced, environmentally controlled process that preserves the purity and performance characteristics of natural graphite.

  • Purification & Intercalation: Natural flake graphite is purified and treated with an intercalation agent to prepare for expansion.
  • Thermal Expansion: The treated graphite is rapidly heated, causing it to expand significantly (up to 300× volume) into "worm-like" vermiform graphite particles.
  • Calendering: The expanded graphite is compressed and rolled under high pressure without binders. The graphite flakes mechanically interlock, forming a strong, cohesive, and flexible foil.
  • Slitting & Cutting: Custom sizing into rolls, sheets, or preformed shapes to meet customer specifications.
  • QC Inspection: Thickness, density, tensile strength, and purity verification to ensure consistent quality.

Application of

Graphite Foil

Graphite foil solves complex engineering challenges in demanding environments where flexibility, temperature resistance, and chemical stability are critical.
